Happy mid autumn!

It's mid autumn today!

Anyway, I got a wee bit too ambitious this year and asked the kids what lanterns they would like. I would custom make for them. Mandy chose deer, and Barry chose giraffe.

After many hours of crouching over the cellophane and wires, my mum and I finally completed the lantern. It was then time for Mandy to decorate her deer.

And presto! We have her deer lantern, which she calls 宝宝鹿. (got the name from a book)
I think she did a great job decorating the lantern with paint. All by herself. I didn't intefere even when she wanted to paint the tail red and the ears purple. Haha.

While my mum and I, er... did not do so well making it.

We're going to play with this lantern on friday night. Sure, it can be lighted up. We tested. :)

Now for the giraffe.... Ermmmm, we'll work on it next year. :p

Wow! I'm impressed! Your lantern looks as good as the store bought ones!!

Is it difficult to work with the cellophane paper?

Did u make a simple battery operated lightbulb or this is a candle-lit lantern?

CM,
Thanks. Ah, the camera helped to hide the flaws. If you know how to do it, then it's not that difficult, just takes some patience. We took some time to figure out how 2 join the 2 wire templates together. The drawing of the deer was a bit tough too. And we used the soft wire so by the time I ran the wire through the picture outline, the whole thing had gone haywire! (pardon the pun) If you know what I mean. Harder wire would be good.

It's a candle lit lantern. I don't know how to insert lightbulb and all..

Bloom,
Thanks! :)

Oh wow...what a fantastic hand-made lantern! Kei, u are very artistic and you do a great job in encouraging your kids to be creative in their hands on experiences in art :)

Hi Rachel,
Thanks for the compliments. We were just experimenting with this lantern making thing. I like to make stuff with the kids. Lanterns, kites, decorations for CNY. But I really have to brush up on my skills.

It's just an excuse for some craft time. And it instils pride I feel. Fun for me too :)
